Single-Use Ratcheting Handles: Designed for the Demands of the ASC Market

Red Star led the complete design, development, and manufacturing of purpose-built single-use ratcheting handles for disposable procedure kits. Developed for ambulatory surgery centers and other high-volume surgical environments, the handles give medical device OEMs a dependable, procedure-ready alternative to reusable instruments—without the expense, reprocessing requirements, and inventory challenges associated with reusable handles.

The Challenge

As more procedures move to ambulatory surgery centers and same-day care environments, OEMs need single-use instruments that balance performance, reliability, and cost. However, the market lacked an economical ratcheting handle capable of delivering the engagement, performance, and consistency expected from a reusable instrument.

Reusable handles also introduce operational burdens that can complicate procedure-kit management:

  • Reprocessing and sterilization increase labor, cost, and turnaround time.
  • Inadequate cleaning between procedures can create cross-contamination risk.
  • Instrument tracking and availability complicate inventory and kit preparation.
  • Existing disposable options may sacrifice performance to achieve a lower price point.

OEM kit manufacturers needed a purpose-built solution engineered for scalable production and the cost requirements of single-use procedure kits—without compromising performance.

The ResultS

Red Star transformed the concept into a fully developed, production-ready instrument. The resulting single-use ratcheting handle delivers dependable engagement and consistent performance while providing OEMs with a cost-effective option for disposable procedure kits.

Because each procedure begins with a new, ready-to-use handle, surgical teams can eliminate reprocessing steps, reduce cross-contamination concerns, and support more efficient operating-room workflows. Incorporating the handle into procedure-specific kits also simplifies inventory management and reduces the need to track, retrieve, and coordinate reusable instruments across departments.

The result is a scalable single-use solution that helps OEMs meet the performance expectations of surgeons and the operational demands of the growing ASC market.
